Compass Curriculum is the signature undergraduate education program at UCCS for all majors and all colleges. The program endeavors to provide transfer students with the right tools for professional and personal success. All parts of the program incorporate the skills employers say they want students to have, including critical thinking, oral and written communication, ethics, innovation, problem-solving, understanding inclusiveness, and sustainability.
So Much More Than General Education
Compass Curriculum guides transfer students through enriching courses with real-world applications. Writing-intensive courses further develop academic writing skills. Sustainability courses explore interactions between human development and the environment, addressing ideas about social equity, economic development, and environmental impact. Inclusiveness courses teach the importance of diversity, inclusion over exclusion, and understanding different cultures.
UCCS can apply transfer courses to fulfill Compass Curriculum requirements. Students with all lower-division general education requirements at any public institution in Colorado, including gtPathways, are deemed to have fulfilled the “Gateway” and “Explore” requirements of the Compass Curriculum, but they still must complete “Navigate” and “Summit” courses, as well as the upper-division writing-intensive course. They may also need to take a second writing-intensive course and other courses to fulfill the Inclusiveness and Sustainability requirements. All colleges, and some individual majors, may have additional requirements beyond the Compass Curriculum.
